For the first three days, your tattoo is essentially an open wound and must be treated carefully to prevent infection – something you really want to avoid.
1–3 hours after your session, gently remove the wrap your artist applied. Your tattoo needs air. Wash the area with warm water and mild soap, then gently pat dry with a paper towel.
Sometimes your artist may advise re-wrapping after cleaning – especially if you’re in a dirty area or the tattoo is in a spot likely to rub against bedsheets.
Tattoo ink can stain clothes and bedding. Use clean sheets you don’t mind getting marked, just in case.
Use only your hands to gently clean your healing tattoo and stick to the guidance below.
Keep the area clean and dry. Do not soak or submerge it in water at any time.
Gently wash with mild soap during a quick shower, no more than twice daily.
Never use hot water – stick to cold or lukewarm water only.
Until fully healed, avoid baths, pools, the sea, or anything that would soak the tattoo.
Keep it out of direct sun, and try not to touch the area unless necessary.
Now it’s time to start moisturising. Always wash your hands before touching your tattoo or applying any balm.
After each gentle clean, apply a thin layer of the balm your artist recommended.
Use only a small amount – avoid thick or clumped patches on your skin.
If you’re healing more than one tattoo, use separate balms to prevent cross-contamination.
Healing times vary – some skin types recover faster than others. If your skin gets dry quickly, apply balm more often. 2–3 times daily, and once before bed, is ideal.
Continue the same routine as day 3—gently clean the area and apply your balm. Larger pieces may need a little extra time to fully heal. Your tattoo remains a wound until it’s completely scabbed and peeled. During this time, it’s still vulnerable to bacteria. Stick to the guide and keep it clean and away from unclean environments.
Swelling, itching, peeling, and mild oozing are all normal reactions during healing. These are signs your body is responding to the trauma. Never pick or scratch at the area—doing so can ruin the design and increase the risk of infection. If you notice oozing (clear plasma, blood, ink or lymph fluid), it means your body is in healing mode. Dab gently with a clean paper towel to keep it dry.
Some people also experience the ‘tattoo flu,’ feeling run down for a day or two. Rest, stay hydrated, and use over-the-counter painkillers if needed.
Remember, just a few weeks of care gives you a lifetime of art worth showing off.
